New McLaren Hybrid Supercar Named

McLaren revealed their plans earlier this year to launch a hybrid supercar to form a new category of vehicles to sit in their impressive line-up. Fast-forward to this week and McLaren finally announced that the new supercar is ditching the usual combination of numbers and letters that the company adopts for its naming-conventions, and instead the latest model will be called Artura. 

High Performance Hybrid

McLaren’s newest series will be named ‘High Performance Hybrid’ (HPH) and the Artura will be the first model to fit in this new category of performance vehicles, ultimately replacing the Sports Series line. Historically McLaren has reserved names for its Ultimate Series cars, so this too is a new direction for the supercar manufacturer. 

McLaren Artura Performance

The new Artura has recently entered the final stage of development which often involves testing out on public roads, hence the recent surge in McLaren spy shots with the design mostly camouflaged. Although final performance figures are yet to be revealed, we do know that the new McLaren Hybrid will be powered by a turbo V6 engine paired with an electric motor which is expected to produce the same levels of performance as McLaren’s traditional 4 litre twin-turbo V8 that can be found in the McLaren 720S.

Emission-free Driving

With an ‘EV Only’ mode expected to be offered, the new McLaren Artura supercar will have the capability to drive on its electric power only for a certain distance, meaning zero tailpipe emissions and no fossil fuels burned. Most drivers will use the two power sources together which will mean improved fuel economy and much improved low-end torque which is typical of electric motors.
